We all know how much I like to knit pointless animals, but they're so darn cute. Plus I'll soon have a kid to play with my goofy toys. This guy is from Knitty's summer issue and it's designed by a woman from St Paul who shares an obsession with Deadliest Catch with me. I put him in the state fair and he got 3rd place, I'm so proud of my little guy! He now lives on the dashboard of my car to navigate us through traffic or to make me smile when I get road rage.

Shelly Belly Melody Hat

This pattern was awesome. I couldn't find the picture, surprise surprise. The computer often foils my plans. This is made out of Iceland from Cascade yarns on a size 9. The letters are duplicate stitch and there is a orange hem inside the hat. It was a big hit at this 2 yr old's bday party. She opened it and immediately put it on and there it stayed for the rest of the party-this was in March by the way. That's the kind of kid who will get more knitted things in the future!

Summertime (Will Smith style)

Yay! It's a Sirdar pattern for their bamboo yarn, but I used Shibu- a washable silk, pretty spiffy. You can't really tell from the pic, but the top of the orange section was very pointy. I was grateful the purple neatened that right up! The pattern is from Lace Style and I used Gems Opal, the sport merino wool. I was kinda bitter for a few days when I found out I was running out of purple. You see-I debated over the color scheme until I settled on the purple because that one came in a 50 gram hank (the last one by the way)-which the pattern calls for- lo and behold the hat takes more than 50 frickin grams of yarn. So not only did I not use the color I really wanted (peacock), but I had to buy a 100 gram hank of the purple...in a different dye lot!! But it doesn't bother me too much, really. OK ranting done, I really do love it and it fits well, that bitch was well worth the pain.

This is who I want to marry?

Ah..my own personal incredible Hulk. This is a sweater that I started earlier this winter for my sweetheart. It is made from Magpie by Rowan. I love knitting with it, although it is a bit scratchy. Chris put it on and gave me the funniest look, "it's itchy" (in a whiny, pathetic voice). I know it will get much softer after it has been washed. The good thing is that we are about the same size so I will gain a new sweater if he doesn't like it! I finished one of the sleeves but I am blogging about it to give myself motivation to finish it. I am in a "starting-a-new-project" mood; so I am trying to get excited for my old projects in order to keep me from bringing home some Elsebeth Lavold Bamboucle to cast on for a summer top. If you've seen me around out in the cold you would know I am telling the truth! This pattern is called fanning the flames, it's a type of domino knitting. I love this technique because you just can't put it down, you always want to do one more section. At Borealis we just got a new pattern in for a blanket using the domino or mosaic knitting, I have been inspired by both of these projects to make a blanket using all of my leftover scrap yarn from socks. We went down there for Chris' cousin's wedding. We made a good time out of a lot of bad situations, but I'm glad to be home. This is the fine chapel at a truck stop somewhere in Missouri, one of my more interesting photos (besides the wedding). The oil pump with Chris down below was in the front yard of the ranch where the wedding was held, who knew? The lovers mittens I made for them was a huge hit. I was an idiot...I didn't get any pics of the mittens sorry to disappoint you!

Your Peeps are Calling!

This is a Fiber Trends pattern that I've always wanted to try-a felted hen and her chicks. The two projects I am looking at both use size 9 needles. Now I know I have several size 9 needles, but I can't risk permenantly abandoning the projects from which I would strip these needles from. I have picked up the aran coat I started last winter which is pictured here. It is on size 9 needles...but then Chris started asking me about his sweater that I also started last winter, damn that one is on 6's. I am glad to say there is progress on both sweaters. I completed the front of the aran coat and started with another sleeve, then I will have the other front and the collar to go.

Fair Isle Fever

I think fair isle fever is an appropriate explanation for what I've been going through. This sweater was really fun to knit because of the interesting construction. It is a design from Norah Gaughan out of her book, Knitting Nature. I wanted to finish this one quickly before the eighties trend is over. It fits me much better than I had expected with its unflattering shape. The wide band along the bottom really pulls it together. I would call it a successful experiment in odd shapes, which is probably pretty rare, thanks Norah!

Double Happiness

A few days after Christmas I was given the wonderful task of knitting this kimono jacket for a shop model for Borealis. This is what it looked like Sunday morning, I finished it that day and will put it up in the store on Tuesday. Bruce has given me his approval as usual. It is a extravagant kit from Twisted Sisters-its like knitting with the rolls royce of yarns. The blue/brown is mohair (called "mojo") and in the green areas it is held with a rayon and cotton blend ("oasis"). It knit up fast on size 10 needles. The kimono was a nice reward after all that frantic xmas knitting. I am trying to finish up a few things before staring new tempting projects. There is an end in sight for my bubble sweater, hopefully you will see that this week.

Hello Dolly

So here it is-the creation for my little cousin, who dubbed her Nala...I have a feeling that she recently watched the Lion King. It was a lot of fun to give gifts that I knew would be loved. This first picture is a little creepy but I find it hilarious. The girls at the yarn store joke about each other having knitting elves in their stash at home that finish all of their projects fast. This is as good as Bigfoot footage! Call the national enquirer! No, wait, it's just a doll for the little cousin.
The gray socks are for my aunt. I am really glad I completed these because last year she only got one sock...until July! They are made out of Raggi-a worsted wool/nylon blend that is great for these last minute x-mas projects. That is what my uncle is modeling on his feet also. His socks are special, I put garter stitch on the bottom so they are super squishy and comfy. He has sore feet, to say the least, so I hope these make it a bit better.
And last but not least-especially not least in stitches- the finished Dr. Who Scarf! My uncle was very excited about wearing the scarf to his friends house where they watch the show together. I'm glad I followed the official pattern!

Finally, I'm back

I know, I know... It's been forever since I made a blog entry. I moved last month and our internet wasn't up and working until yesterday. So I have an excuse- although not a good one. And of course I've still been knitting like crazy. I finished this baby bolero in just a few days. It's for some friends who just had a baby girl, I still haven't seen them yet because they live an hour away, but that's why I made it huge. The yarn is Cascade Sierra, a cotton and wool blend and the pattern is from Knitting Pure and Simple-which means I didn't have to sew it! These socks were fun to make too. The green one is for my dad's xmas present-so hopefully I will actually finish the second one-or least start it. It is made out of Silky Sock and Gems Pearl, the silk sock yarn is so nice to knit with. The red sock is made out of Dream in Color Smooshy. The color is chinatown apple and the pattern is from DIC, called sleepwalker socks. These ones are for me so you probably won't see the other one until next year. Well I will write more than once every two months-I hope!

Check out the progress, can you believe it? Then you can also believe that I have been distracted by another new project. A really cute baby bolero for some friends of mine who just had a baby girl. Back to Dr Who-I have had a lot of help from friends to get the length on this scarf and they are even asking where it is to work on it some more. I could get all of my xmas knitting done this way. The yarn I'm using is Nature Spun Sport from Brown Sheep. It's inexpensive, comes in great colors and the websites for Dr Who recommend it.

Dr Who Update

Unfortunately for you guys I am really excited every time this scarf grows so you might just see every painful moment! I never tried it until now because it looked like such a pain in the ass, but I actually like doing it. The pattern is really addicting with all of these colors to play with. It's perfect for this chilly but still humid weather. I've worn it everyday since I finished on Sunday. I had some luck at the state fair. I entered a sideways sweater, a mosaic tote, and the fiesta mittens which you've seen, I got 2 second place prizes and a third. I can't wait to see them at the fair while stuffing my face with corn dogs and mini donuts.

This is an old finished project, from last spring. I was the only one, from my family, who made it to the final table, but then I started getting terrible cards. Oh well, the entry fee was ten dollars and I have never made $10 last that long on a blackjack table so I am satisfied. We also went fishing after the casino, no luck with the fish either. I had to show you my favorite fishing tool-the biffy bucket as I like to call it. That's probably plenty of information on the bucket eh? Also I have been making some good progress on my euroflax sweater. I am starting the cap sleeves and hopefully I can finish this before it's snowing again. The weather is going to be awesome today, I am waiting for the sun to hit the dock then I will be swimming my heart out all afternoon.

I'm at the cabin!!! I look forward to this trip every year and my poor co-workers had to listen to me count down the days. Then they call me to whine about how much work they have to do. Oh well...I'm still at the cabin!! I have been mainly working on the sweater you guys have already seen, this green-gray one. I'm getting close to finishing. I also started this pink and brown shrug for my sister. It's from lace style. I've always wanted to make a shrug because they're small, but I think they are kinda stupid. I am either cold or hot-not just my shoulders. But my sister is cool enough to pull it off so she'll get it. The yarn is Debbie Bliss Cotton and Silk. It's nice to knit with, but the lace pattern is so easy it's getting boring...my sister is here to egg me on, she yells at me every time I'm working on something else. I will have more cabin pics soon, but now I am off to the casino. My dad, mom, Chris, and I entered a blackjack tournament we all moved on to the second round except mom. I was the top winner out of every one with $1825, too bad it's not real money. Wish me luck on the next round. I'll keep you updated, unless there is nice weather-then I'll be swimming!

Xmas in July

I've had the last four days off of work! But I had to have oral surgery, so it hasn't really been fun. Except for this stocking which I managed to knit while taking pain killers, I was impressed. My co-worker made a set of stockings like this for her family that inspired me to make my own. Knitting is wonderful in recovery, it keeps my mind off of the discomfort. I had a root canal Tues. am that went wrong. My roots were growing into my nerve canal, and when the dentist filled my tooth it compressed my nerve. This caused my face to go numb. The oral surgeon took out the filling from the nerve canal by cutting into the side of my freakin' jaw!! Not a pleasurable experience. Thankfully my boss and coworkers are really helping out and giving me a lot of time to rest, boy do I need it. I started these last fall. I picked it up last night with only one thumb missing from the picture. So after about six months of this mitten living in my stash, I finish it in about an hour. It's Lucy Neatby's Fiesta mittens. I used a Cherry Tree Hill Supersock potluck for the varigated and Lucy's celestial merino for the solid. They were a lot easier to make than they look. I'll be excited for cold weather this year.

Ok...I was distracted, but it's another UFO! Now that I'm putting it in writing I will I have to stick to it. I am going to finish ten projects before buying new yarn. Yes I said it, ten. Now that sounds crazy because most people don't let themselves get out of control like I have. I stopped counting after I started my 3oth project. I need to get myself into check! I've already completed three; a pair of fingerless mittens, my dads socks (which you saw), and a tank. This top is made out of euroflax and is a Debbie Bliss pattern from her pure silk book. I'm done with the front and just starting on the back. Hopefully this will be my fourth finished object, but as you will soon learn I am easily distracted.

Surprise-it's the aqua swirl pillow from Pick Up Sticks. We just got the pattern in at Borealis Yarns, where I work. It was so quick to knit and I only used three skeins of Cascade 220, which is always great-the pattern called for four. I even used size 10.5 needles when it calls for 10, I figured it's felted so gauge doesn't matter and a pillow can always be a little bigger. It's also fun to hear peoples interpretations. My mom said it looked like a ying-yang symbol, my sister thought it was an eyeball, and my boyfriend, Chris asked if I were trying to hypnotize him.

Now this is a fun intarsia adventure!
